LUKE 5:1-11 PUT OUT INTO DEEP WATER
Year A – Thursday of the 22nd Week in Ordinary Time
In today's Gospel, Peter has worked all night and caught nothing. He is tired, disappointed, and probably ready to go home, but Jesus tells him, “Put out into deep water and lower your nets.” Peter could have said, “Lord, we already tried; it didn't work.” Instead, he takes the risk of trusting Jesus—and the empty nets suddenly become full. Sometimes the greatest miracles begin when we are willing to trust God's word even when our own experience tells us to give up.
How often do we find ourselves in Peter's boat? We work hard, we try our best, we pray, and still nothing seems to change. Perhaps we have been trying to repair a relationship, raise a child, serve the Church, overcome a personal struggle, or accomplish something important, and we are simply tired of trying. We may quietly say, “I've tried everything.” But Jesus may be asking us to try again—not simply with more effort, but with greater trust in Him. The difference is not always what we do; sometimes it is whose word we are willing to trust.
Perhaps today's Gospel invites us to ask: Where is Jesus asking me to “put out into deep water” today? Maybe He is asking you to forgive again, begin again, pray again, or take a step you have been afraid to take. Peter discovered that his boat became fruitful when he stopped relying only on his own experience and trusted Jesus. We may not know what the result will be, but we know who is in the boat with us. Let us put out into the deep—not because we are certain of success, but because we trust the One who is asking us to go.
