MARK 6:17-29 THE COURAGE TO STAND FOR THE TRUTH

Year A, Saturday of the 21st Week in Ordinary Time

Memorial of the Passion of Saint John the Baptist

In today's Gospel, John the Baptist pays the ultimate price for speaking the truth. He tells Herod that his relationship with Herodias is wrong, and even though John knows the consequences, he refuses to remain silent. John teaches us that faithfulness to God sometimes requires courage, especially when speaking the truth may cost us something. His death reminds us that holiness is not always about being successful or accepted; sometimes it is simply about remaining faithful.

We live in a world where it is often easier to remain silent than to speak what is right. We may keep quiet because we don't want to offend someone, lose a friendship, create tension, or be criticized. There are certainly times when we need wisdom about how and when to speak, but John reminds us that truth cannot always be sacrificed for the sake of comfort. At the same time, speaking the truth as a Christian does not mean being harsh or judgmental. John spoke because he cared about God's truth and the salvation of others.

Perhaps today's Gospel invites us to ask ourselves: Where am I being tempted to remain silent when I should speak the truth? And perhaps an even deeper question is: Do I have the courage to live the truth when nobody applauds me for it? Saint John the Baptist shows us that our faithfulness may not always be understood or appreciated by others. But we do not live for the approval of the crowd; we live for Christ. May John give us the courage to stand for what is right, the wisdom to speak with love, and the strength to remain faithful even when it costs us something.
