MATTHEW 23:27-32 WHEN THE OUTSIDE DOESN'T MATCH THE INSIDE
Year A, Wednesday of the 21st Week in Ordinary Time
In today's Gospel, Jesus continues His strong warning to the scribes and Pharisees, comparing them to “whitewashed tombs”—beautiful on the outside but filled with death within. His words remind us that God is not impressed by appearances. What matters to Him is the truth of our hearts and the integrity of our lives. Christianity is not about looking holy; it is about allowing Christ to make us holy from within.
We live in a world that places enormous value on appearances. We carefully manage how others see us, sometimes even through social media, while the struggles within our hearts remain hidden. We can appear patient while carrying anger, appear generous while seeking recognition, or speak about forgiveness while quietly holding on to resentment. None of us is perfect, and Jesus is not asking us to pretend that we are. He is asking us to be honest enough to let Him enter the places in our hearts that we would rather keep hidden.
Perhaps today's Gospel invites us to ask ourselves: Is there something in my life that looks good on the outside but needs healing on the inside? The good news is that Jesus does not expose our weaknesses to condemn us; He reveals them so that He can heal us. We do not need to impress God—He already knows us completely and loves us anyway. Let us bring our whole selves to Him, asking for the grace to become the same person in private that we try to be in public. When Christ transforms the inside, the beauty of our lives will no longer need to be painted on—it will naturally shine from within.
