JOHN 21:15-19 DO YOU LOVE ME?

Year A, Monday of the 13th Week in Ordinary Time

Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles

Today, the Church celebrates two of her greatest saints: Peter and Paul. At first glance, they could not have been more different. Peter was a simple fisherman; Paul was a well-educated Pharisee. Peter walked with Jesus during His public ministry; Paul came to know Christ after the Resurrection. Yet both became great apostles because they allowed God's grace to transform their lives.

In today's Gospel, we witness one of the most moving conversations in Scripture. Three times Jesus asks Peter, "Do you love me?" These three questions gently heal the wounds left by Peter's three denials during the Passion. Jesus does not humiliate Peter or dwell on his failures. Instead, He restores him with mercy and entrusts him with the mission of caring for His flock: "Feed my lambs... Tend my sheep."

This Gospel reminds us that God does not choose perfect people; He perfects those whom He calls. Peter had failed, yet he was forgiven and given a greater mission. Paul had persecuted the Church, yet he became its greatest missionary. Their lives proclaim that God's mercy is always greater than our past and that our weaknesses need not prevent us from becoming faithful disciples.

The question Jesus asked Peter is the same question He asks each of us today: "Do you love me?" Our love for Christ is shown not only by our words but by the way we serve others, forgive those who hurt us, remain faithful in difficult times, and care for those entrusted to us. Every Christian, in different ways, is called to "feed the sheep" through lives of charity, witness, and service.

As we honor Saints Peter and Paul today, let us thank God for the gift of their faith and courage. May Peter's steadfast love and Paul's missionary zeal inspire us to follow Christ more faithfully. And may we, like them, entrust our lives completely to the Lord, confident that His grace can accomplish great things through ordinary people.
