YEAR A, FRIDAY OF THE 8TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

Today’s Gospel may sound surprising. Jesus curses the fig tree, cleanses the temple, and speaks about faith and forgiveness. At first, these scenes seem unrelated, but they carry one message: God desires more than outward appearances. He looks for a living and fruitful heart.

The fig tree had leaves but no fruit. The temple was busy with activity but had lost its deeper purpose as a house of prayer. Jesus is not acting out of anger alone—He is challenging emptiness hidden beneath appearances.

That speaks to our lives too. Sometimes we can look fine on the outside while carrying dryness within. We go through routines, responsibilities, even religious practices, yet our hearts may feel distant, tired, or distracted.

Jesus is not condemning us; He is inviting us to honesty and renewal. Faith is not simply looking religious or doing the right things outwardly. It is a living relationship with God that bears fruit—kindness, integrity, compassion, and forgiveness.

And Jesus ends with something very practical: forgive. Because resentment can harden the heart and quietly block the peace God wants to give us.

Today’s Gospel is not about fear but about invitation. Jesus enters the temple of our hearts and asks gently: Is there room here for prayer, trust, and mercy?

Question to ponder today: Am I focused more on appearances—or am I allowing my faith to bear real fruit in my daily life?
