MARK 10:32-45 GREATNESS THAT SERVES

YEAR A, WEDNESDAY OF THE 8TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

Today’s Gospel is very human. Jesus is speaking about His coming suffering and death, but the disciples are thinking about something else—who will be greatest. James and John ask for places of honor beside Him.

It is easy to judge them, but if we are honest, their struggle is also ours. We all want to matter. We want to be recognized, respected, appreciated. There is nothing wrong with that. But sometimes, without noticing, we begin to seek importance more than service, position more than purpose.

Jesus gently turns everything upside down. “Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant.”

That is not how the world usually thinks. Greatness is often measured by power, success, or influence. But Jesus measures differently. For Him, greatness is found in love that serves.

And most of that service is very ordinary. A parent caring for a child. Someone helping a neighbor. A person staying faithful to responsibilities even when tired or unnoticed. These acts rarely make headlines, but they matter deeply to God.

Jesus Himself becomes the example. “The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve.” He does not ask us to go where He has not gone Himself.

So today we are invited to ask not, “How important am I?” but rather, “How can I love and serve where I am?”

Because in God’s eyes, the heart that serves is already great.

Question to ponder today: In my daily life, am I seeking recognition—or am I quietly learning the greatness of serving others with love?
