MARK 10:28–31 WHAT WE LEAVE… AND WHAT WE GAIN

Year A, Tuesday of the 8th Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel, Peter says to Jesus, “We have given up everything and followed you.” It sounds almost like a question hidden inside a statement: Was it worth it?

That is a very human question. Many people ask it quietly in their hearts. Parents sacrifice for children. Couples sacrifice for marriage. People work hard, forgive, serve, and carry responsibilities that no one sees. And sometimes we wonder: Does any of this matter?

Jesus does not deny sacrifice. He knows that love and faithfulness cost something. Following Him means letting go of selfishness, pride, comfort, or the need to control everything.

But Jesus also gives a promise: no sacrifice made for love and for God is ever lost. Perhaps not always in the way we expect, but God never ignores generosity or faithfulness.

And maybe that is important to hear today. The world often measures success by what we keep, own, or achieve. Jesus measures differently—by what we are willing to give, share, and surrender in love.

Still, Jesus is honest. Blessings and struggles often come together. Faith does not remove difficulty, but it gives deeper meaning to sacrifice.

In the end, the Gospel reminds us that nothing offered with love is wasted in God’s hands.

Question to ponder today: What sacrifice or act of faithfulness in my life feels unnoticed—and can I trust that God sees and treasures it?
