Matthew 23:1–12 LEADERSHIP IN HUMILITY

Year A, Tuesday of the Second Week of Lent

In today’s Gospel, Jesus addresses the crowds and His disciples about the scribes and Pharisees. He warns against pride, hypocrisy, and seeking honor for oneself. “The greatest among you will be your servant.”

This teaching goes straight into the heart of daily life. We all carry ambitions, desires for recognition, and the temptation to appear more important than we are. Even in small ways — at work, at home, or in social circles — we sometimes crave acknowledgment or think we must prove ourselves.

But, Jesus reminds us that God’s kingdom operates differently. True greatness is found in humility, service, and authenticity. The person who leads with compassion, who listens, who helps quietly, and who puts others first is truly honored in God’s eyes.

Lent is a time to examine our hearts:

• Where am I seeking attention or approval instead of serving others?

• How can I practice humility in my words and actions today?

• Am I willing to let God be the center rather than myself?

By following Jesus in humility, we live the Gospel authentically. Our actions become a witness to God’s love, and we free ourselves from the burden of pride or competition.

Question to Ponder: In what areas of my life is God asking me to lead through service rather than seeking recognition?
