Mark 4:1–20 HEARTS THAT RECEIVE THE WORD

Year A, Wednesday of the Third Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches through the familiar image of a sower scattering seed. The seed is the same in every case, but the results differ because the soil is different. Some seed falls on the path, some on rocky ground, some among thorns, and some on rich soil where it bears fruit.

Jesus explains that the seed is the Word of God, generously offered to all. What determines its fruitfulness is the condition of the heart that receives it. Distraction, fear, and attachment to worldly concerns can prevent the Word from taking root. But a heart that is open, patient, and faithful allows God’s Word to grow and bear abundant fruit.

This Gospel invites us to look inward. The Word of God is planted in us again and again—through Scripture, prayer, and daily experiences. The question is not whether God is speaking, but whether we are truly listening and allowing His Word to shape our lives.

Question to Ponder: What kind of soil is my heart today, and how can I make it more open to God’s Word?
