Mark 3:31–35 THE FAMILY OF GOD

Year A, Tuesday of the Third Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel, Jesus is told that His mother and relatives are outside looking for Him. His response may seem surprising at first, but it reveals a deeper truth. Jesus looks at those seated around Him and says, “Here are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”

Jesus is not rejecting His family; He is expanding the meaning of family. He teaches that belonging to God’s family is rooted in listening to God’s word and living it faithfully. Faith is not only about closeness by blood, but closeness by obedience, love, and commitment to God’s will.

This Gospel gently invites us to reflect on our own discipleship. Each day, we are called to be part of God’s family by choosing love, mercy, and faithfulness in ordinary moments. When we do God’s will, we become witnesses to the unity and care that bind the family of God together.

Question to Ponder: How do I live out my identity as a member of God’s family through my daily choices and actions?
