Mark 3:22–30 STANDING WITH THE SPIRIT
Year A, Monday of the 3rd Week in Ordinary Time
In today’s Gospel, Jesus is accused of acting by the power of evil. The scribes, unable to deny the good He does, attempt to explain it away by calling it the work of the devil. Jesus responds calmly but firmly, showing the absurdity of their claim: a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand.
At the heart of this passage is a warning about the danger of hardening one’s heart. When people become so closed that they refuse to recognize God’s work, even goodness can appear threatening. Jesus reminds us that to reject the action of the Holy Spirit is to close ourselves off from forgiveness and life.
This Gospel invites quiet self-examination. Are we open to God’s Spirit at work in unexpected ways, or do fear and pride make us resistant? The Spirit always leads toward truth, healing, and unity. To stand with the Spirit is to remain humble, attentive, and willing to be changed.
Question to Ponder: Am I open to recognizing the work of the Holy Spirit, even when it challenges my assumptions or comfort?
