MARK 1:21–28 AUTHORITY THAT SETS FREE
Year A Tuesday of the First Week in Ordinary Time
In today’s Gospel, Jesus enters the synagogue in Capernaum and begins to teach. The people are immediately struck, not only by what He says, but by how He says it. Jesus teaches with authority—an authority that comes not from position or learning alone, but from His deep union with the Father.
That authority is revealed even more clearly when Jesus confronts the unclean spirit. With a simple command, He frees the man from what binds him. Jesus does not argue or use force; His word itself has the power to heal and restore. The people are amazed because they see that in Jesus, God’s saving power is present and active.
As we continue in Ordinary Time, this Gospel reminds us that Christ’s authority is not meant to dominate, but to liberate. When we allow His word to enter our hearts, it frees us from fear, sin, and whatever keeps us from living fully. Jesus continues to speak today—inviting us to listen, to trust, and to be made whole.
Question to Ponder: Where in my life do I need to allow Christ’s word to free me from what binds or troubles my heart?
