MARK 1:14–20 CALLED BY NAME, CALLED TO FOLLOW
Year A, Monday of the First Week in Ordinary Time
In today’s Gospel, we hear the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry and the first call of the disciples. Jesus proclaims a simple and powerful message: “The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” Then He walks along the Sea of Galilee and calls ordinary men—fishermen at work—to follow Him.
What is striking is their response. Simon, Andrew, James, and John leave their nets immediately and follow Jesus. They do not fully understand where this path will lead, but they trust the one who calls them. Their willingness shows us that discipleship begins not with having all the answers, but with a readiness to respond.
As we begin Ordinary Time, this Gospel reminds us that our daily lives are the place where God calls us. Christ continues to walk beside us, inviting us to follow Him more closely. Like the first disciples, we are asked to let go of whatever holds us back and to trust that following Jesus will lead us to a life filled with purpose and grace.
Question to Ponder: What “nets” might Jesus be asking me to leave behind so that I can follow Him more freely?
