LUKE 1:5–25 JOY THAT GROWS THROUGH WAITING

Year A, Friday of the 3rd Week of Advent

Today’s Gospel introduces us to Zechariah and Elizabeth, a faithful couple who carried the heavy burden of long waiting. They lived righteous lives and trusted God, yet their deepest prayer seemed unanswered. When the angel announces that Elizabeth will bear a son, Zechariah struggles to believe. His doubt does not cancel God’s plan—but it does invite him into a period of silence.

This silence becomes a sacred space where joy slowly grows. Zechariah is given time to listen, reflect, and learn to trust more deeply. God’s promise is fulfilled not because Zechariah fully understood, but because God is faithful. Elizabeth, in her quiet gratitude, recognizes the Lord’s mercy and rejoices in what He has done.

As we continue our Advent journey focused on Joy, this Gospel reminds us that joy often matures through waiting. It is easy to lose heart when prayers seem delayed, but Advent assures us that God is always at work, even in silence. Joy does not come only at the moment of fulfillment—it begins when we trust God enough to keep waiting.

Zechariah and Elizabeth teach us that God’s timing is perfect, even when it feels slow. Their story encourages us to remain faithful in prayer, to trust in God’s promises, and to allow silence to shape our hearts for the joy that is to come.

May this Gospel help us embrace our own seasons of waiting, confident that God is preparing something greater than we can imagine.

Question to Ponder: In what area of my life is God asking me to wait with trust so that deeper joy may grow within me this Advent?
