MATTHEW 1:18–25 THE QUIET JOY OF TRUST

Year A, Thursday of the 3rd Week of Advent

Today’s Gospel invites us to reflect on the quiet, steady joy found in trust. Joseph discovers that Mary is with child, and his world is suddenly turned upside down. Confused and afraid, he plans to step aside quietly—yet even in his uncertainty, Joseph remains just and compassionate.

When God speaks to Joseph in a dream, Joseph listens. He does not argue or demand explanations. He simply trusts and obeys. In that trust, joy is born—not loud or dramatic, but deep and peaceful. Joseph teaches us that joy often comes when we surrender our plans and allow God to lead us in ways we did not expect.

As Advent draws closer to Christmas, many of us carry worries, unanswered questions, or situations we cannot control. Like Joseph, we may not understand what God is doing. Yet Advent reminds us that trusting God, even in silence, opens our hearts to a joy that fear cannot take away.

Joseph’s yes allowed Jesus to enter the world through love, protection, and humility. May his example help us discover that true joy grows when we choose faith over fear and allow God to work through our quiet obedience.

Question to Ponder: Where is God asking me to trust Him more deeply so that I may experience the quiet joy of surrender this Advent?
