MATTHEW 1:1–17 JOY WRITTEN INTO OUR STORY

Year A, Wednesday of the 3rd Week of Advent

At first glance, today’s Gospel may seem like a simple list of names—generations and ancestors, familiar and unfamiliar. Yet hidden within this genealogy is a powerful message of joy. Matthew shows us that God enters human history not in a perfect story, but in a real one, filled with struggles, failures, surprises, and hope.

The family tree of Jesus includes saints and sinners, kings and outsiders, men and women who made great choices and those who made painful mistakes. Still, God worked through every generation to bring forth His Son. This reminds us that joy does not come from having a flawless past, but from knowing that God is faithful in every chapter of our lives.

As we journey through Advent, this Gospel reassures us that our own stories matter to God. Our background, our wounds, our unanswered questions—none of these disqualify us. Instead, God weaves them into His plan. The joy of Advent is knowing that God chooses to come to us exactly where we are.

Jesus did not arrive suddenly or randomly. He came through generations of waiting, trusting, and hoping. Today’s Gospel invites us to rejoice in the truth that God is patiently at work in our lives too, even when we cannot yet see the full picture.

May this genealogy remind us that our lives are part of God’s larger story of salvation, and that Christ comes to bring joy not only to the world—but to our own hearts.

Question to Ponder: How can I recognize God’s presence and faithfulness in my own life story, even in the imperfect parts, and allow that to deepen my joy this Advent?
