MATTHEW 21:28–32 THE JOY OF A CHANGED HEART
Year A, Tuesday of the 3rd Week of Advent
In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks honestly and directly about conversion. He tells the parable of two sons—one who refuses at first but later obeys, and another who promises obedience but never acts. Through this simple story, Jesus reminds us that God’s joy is found not in perfect behavior or religious appearance, but in a heart willing to change.
Jesus points to the tax collectors and prostitutes—people often judged or dismissed—who believed John the Baptist and turned their lives toward God. Their joy came from repentance, from discovering that God had not given up on them. Meanwhile, the religious leaders, confident in their status, struggled to rejoice because they resisted change.
As we continue our Advent journey focused on Joy, this Gospel invites us to reflect on the joy that comes from humility. True joy is not about always getting it right; it is about being open to God’s grace. When we admit our need for God and take even a small step back toward Him, heaven rejoices—and so do our hearts.
Advent assures us that no past failure, hesitation, or weakness can block God’s love. A changed heart, even if it comes late, is precious to God. When we allow ourselves to be transformed, joy quietly fills the spaces once occupied by fear, pride, or regret.
May this Gospel encourage us to let go of appearances and respond honestly to God’s invitation, trusting that every sincere “yes” brings us closer to the joy of Christ’s coming.
Question to Ponder: Where is God inviting me to change my heart so that I may experience the true joy of conversion this Advent?
