Matthew 17:9a, 10–13 A Love That Prepares the Way
Year A, Saturday of the 2nd Week of Advent
In today’s Gospel, the disciples ask Jesus about the coming of Elijah, and He reminds them that John the Baptist has already come to prepare the way for the Lord. As we continue this second week of Advent, the theme of Love invites us to recognize how God’s love works quietly, patiently, and faithfully to prepare our hearts for His Son.
John the Baptist’s mission was one of humility and courage, calling people to repentance and opening their hearts to God’s mercy. Last week, Hope taught us to cry, “Maranatha—come, Lord Jesus,” and this week Love shows us that God’s love is active—it seeks, transforms, and prepares the world for His presence.
Love often comes in hidden ways, not with fanfare, but in small acts of obedience, service, and courage. John’s life reminds us that love sometimes challenges, calls for conversion, and asks us to turn back to God. Advent Love asks us to examine our own hearts: are there areas we have neglected, attitudes we need to change, or people we need to reconcile with? God’s love is patient but persistent, always calling us to prepare the way for Christ in our daily lives. Like John, we are invited to live faithfully, to speak truth with gentleness, and to guide others toward the Lord by our example.
As we conclude this week of Advent reflection, may we follow the example of John the Baptist, allowing God’s love to transform our hearts, awaken our spirits, and help us prepare the way for the coming of Christ in our lives and in the world.
Question to Ponder: How is God calling me to prepare the way for Christ in my own heart and in the lives of those around me?
