Matthew 11:28–30 A Love That Gives Rest

Year A, Wednesday of the 2nd Week of Advent

In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks one of the most comforting invitations ever given: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” As we continue this second week of Advent, the theme of Love deepens, and Jesus reveals that true love does not demand more from us—it offers us rest.

Last week, Hope taught us to cry out “Maranatha—come, Lord Jesus,” and now Love becomes the gentle voice of Jesus saying, “Come to Me.” He does not call the perfect or the strong; He calls the weary, the overwhelmed, the anxious, and the heavy-hearted. His love is not a love that pressures—it is a love that welcomes, calms, and restores.

Advent Love meets us exactly where we feel tired or stretched thin. It understands the burdens we carry—responsibilities, expectations, hidden worries, or emotional weight we seldom name aloud. Jesus invites us not only to come to Him, but to rest in Him, to learn from His heart which is “gentle and humble.” His love does not push us harder; it lifts us up. His love does not add to our burdens; it lightens them. Perhaps today there is a struggle or sorrow we have been carrying alone. Perhaps we have been trying to be strong for others without letting God be strong for us. Jesus reminds us that we were never meant to carry life by ourselves. Love says, “Let Me hold what you can’t.”

As we move through this week of Advent, may we allow ourselves to rest in the Heart of Christ, trusting that His love is strong enough to carry our burdens and gentle enough to heal our wounds. And may we share that same gentle love with others who are quietly carrying more than we realize.

Question to Ponder: What burden do I need to place in the hands of Jesus today so that His gentle love can give my heart rest?
