LUKE 12:49-53 LET THE FIRE BEGIN WITH ME
Thursday of the 29th Week in Ordinary Time, Year A
When I hear Jesus say, “I have come to set the earth on fire,” I have to ask myself: What kind of fire is He talking about? I believe He is speaking about the fire of God’s love and truth—a fire that changes hearts and challenges us to live differently. But we know that following Jesus is not always comfortable. Sometimes the Gospel asks us to forgive when we would rather hold a grudge, speak the truth when silence is easier, or stand up for someone when we would rather stay out of trouble. I struggle with these choices, too. It is easier to talk about love than to practice it when it costs us something.
Jesus also tells us that His message can bring division, even within families. He is not asking us to create arguments or hurt the people we love. Rather, He reminds us that choosing what is right will not always make everyone happy with us. Sometimes even those closest to us may not understand our decisions. I think the challenge is to remain faithful to the Gospel without losing our love, patience, or respect for others.
So today, instead of asking why other people need to change, let me begin by asking myself: Is the fire of Christ’s love alive in me? Does it make me more courageous, more honest, more compassionate? Before I expect the world to change, I must allow the fire of the Gospel to change me. May we have the courage to let Jesus begin that work in us today.
With Love and Prayers
